Pysanky Eggs

Pysanky Eggs

 30 years ago Helen Hnat of Toms River, New Jersey, visited New Skete after seeing an article in Yankee magazine featuring the pysanky of one of the monks. Inspired by their commitment to the ideals of monastic life, in 2011 she decided to donate her own hand crafted pysanky to the Monks to sell in their gift shop. The designs are Carpatho-Rusyn, typical of her family's village in Eastern Slovakia.
The monks are now pleased to offer these treasures to their on-line customers as well.

Pysanky Eggs Set of 3

Pysanky Eggs Set of 3

 To create the designs, a pin is used to apply the melted beeswax to the egg, repeating the process for each stroke or dot. The egg is dipped several times in a dye bath, from the lightest to darkest colors. Finally the wax is removed to reveal the design. Then the egg is emptied and coated with polyurethane to protect and strengthen it. With careful handling, a pysanka will last for many years.
